Love is in the Air: Romantic Retreats in the Heart of Devon

Devon is an extremely popular destination for couples, boasting awe-inspiring scenery, quaint oldy-worldly villages, and stunning stretches of coastline. It’s a popular place to tie the knot, with plenty of romantic attractions to let the sparks fly. Here are some of our top romantic things to do in Devon, guaranteed to make your holiday that little bit more memorable…

Romantic Things to Do in Devon

1) Take a tour of Britain’s last castle

Perched above the Teign Gorge on the edge of Dartmoor, Castle Drogo is a true masterpiece of 20th Century architecture. Designed by renowned architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, the castle was crafted from local granite to resemble a medieval fortress, complete with battlements, a giant entrance tower with twin turrets and a picturesque portcullis. However, the castle was only actually constructed around 100 years ago and was the last to be built in Britain. Enjoy a romantic stroll around the formal gardens, before heading inside and marvelling upon stunning 17th Century tapestries.

2) Visit Dartmoor’s prettiest village

As ‘the prettiest village in Dartmoor’, Lustleigh is a beautiful blend of picturesque thatched cottages, winding narrow lanes and lush enchanted woodland. Situated in the heart of the Wrey Valley, with the river Bovey meandering through the village, Lustleigh is a popular stopover for walkers on the moors who seek a couple of hours wandering a quintessentially British village. Take a trip to the village where ‘time has stood still’ for some truly wonderful woodland walks, spectacular views across Dartmoor National Park and delicious Devon cream tea. How romantic!

3) Go butterfly spotting at Dunsford

Dunsford is one of Devon’s best-loved nature reserves, providing the perfect opportunity to explore the county’s wild side. This two-mile stretch of enchanted woodland runs alongside the River Teign from Clifford Bridge to Steps Bridge, making for some beautiful countryside walks. The nature reserve supports a whole host of wildlife, from butterflies to birds and everything in between, making for the most romantic ramble. Discover 20 species of butterflies, including the rare pearl-bordered, high-brown and silver-washed fritillaries; as well as wagtails, dippers and even kingfishers.

4) Wander Wistman’s Wood

This oldy-worldly woodland is situated in the heart of Dartmoor, steeped in fascinating myths and legends. Wistman’s Wood predominantly consists of dwarf oaks, which tend to grow in unpredictable manners; discover an intertwined web of tangled trees in a stunning setting that remains unspoilt. The low boughs of the trees are covered in lush greenery, whilst the floor is carpeted in spring mosses – creating an ultimate fairytale-like ambiance. Write your own love story as you wander around this enchanted woodland…

5) Ride a hot air balloon with Virgin Balloon Flights

One of the most romantic things to do in Devon is to take a hot air balloon flight over the idyllic countryside. Feel the sense of freedom as you rise slowly over rural Devon, with Exmoor to the north and Dartmoor to the south. Our county is positively teeming with natural beauty and rich heritage, which makes spotting landmarks and beauty spots from the air extremely fascinating – there is always something to capture your attention. It’s the most perfect romantic activity for couples, allowing you to create special memories to be treasured forever.

6) Enjoy a romantic spa day at HarSPA

What better way to start or end your holiday in Devon than a luxury couples’ spa experience? After all, holidays are for relaxing! HarSPA at Sidmouth Harbour Hotel offers a wide range of relaxation and treatment options for you and your significant other to enjoy. Lounge around in the heated swimming pool, hydrotherapy pool, sauna, steam room, fitness centre and outdoor sun terrace; whilst indulging in some of the highest quality spa treatments from Temple Spa. Leave your romantic pamper experience feeling refreshed, renewed, and rejuvenated.

7) Indulge in wine tasting at Pebblebed

Nothing says ‘romantic’ like wine tasting! Pebblebed Vineyard runs exclusive tours of their vineyard and winery every Thursday and Saturday from early May to late September, providing the perfect opportunity to sample some tasty tipples. Wander around the vineyard and learn all about the varieties of grapes grown here, before heading to the winery and discovering the processed involved in making wines. Finally, you will get to taste some of the vineyard’s amazing English sparkling and still wines, with plenty of wines available for purchase to wine and dine your other half.

8) Dine at The Mason’s Arms

Nestled on the edge of Exmoor, this Michelin award-winning pub serves delicious local cuisine in a traditional setting. The Mason’s Arms was built back in the 13th Century, oozing rural beauty and charm. Enjoy a drink (or two) in the cosy beamed bar, before dining beneath the Grecian ceiling mural in the rear dining room. With a seasonal menu boasting beautifully-presented dishes with British and French influences, you are guaranteed a truly delicious meal – ideal for celebrating an anniversary, birthday, or date night.
